Awareness, Balance, Community

Exponential narratives is a method of amplifying community in our storytelling process and to better understand our work’s impact. Our approach is based on awareness of ourselves, of the balance in social power we keep with others, and of our accountability to communities our stories touch.

We called it exponential narratives because we believe community engagement in the process of telling a story only increases its impact—on ourselves, on those in the stories and on society in general. Engagement raises our credibility. We believe authenticity and transparency are more honest than the assumption that we are objective observers. We believe our stories don’t stand alone, they weave into broader narratives. Awareness of these narratives allows us to be more responsible members of the fourth estate, of the arts or of the public discourse that fosters our democracy.

Our Approach

"All I know is that I know nothing.” -Socrates

It all begins with a very socratic awareness: that what we don’t know affects the questions we ask and ultimately the framing of the stories we tell. More importantly, that while we may be in the position to tell a story, there may be ways to collaborate or engage with community to get a message out.

Power in production

How do the technical elements of production influence social power dynamics in our stories? Shooting two people from the same angles can exacerbate power dynamics. Lighting for a room can favor one skin tone against another. Even story structures can favor certain power dynamics in society. Getting technical, how can your camera, your mic and your structures balance out social inequities.

engagement Vs DISTRIBUTION

Beyond impressions and reach, somewhere past simple engagement, is impact. Increasingly, the responsibility for reaching audiences rests on storytellers themselves. So why not have authentic engagement with our community? Instead of thinking about how to reach as many people as possible, why not focus on the right people, with the right stories, at the right time?
